The
tall and well-built Arpit Ranka who plays the strong Duryodhan in Star
Plus’ Mahabharat (Swastik Productions) is happy that he has managed to
keep his character in good light and not make it a completely negative
one, as seen in the earlier versions of the epic.
Talking on the same, the successful model turned actor who has been in the industry for ten years says, “A character like Duryodhan could have got completely dark if not played properly. I put in my effort to play it in a way that people understand his side of the story and also get to know why he behaved that way.”
“Having grown up watching the earlier Mahabharat, Duryodhan’s character was completely in the negative shade, and so I made it a point to project it differently. And I am glad that I have managed to do that. And not just me, I think the whole team has managed to break that mould and bring in a whole new dimension to the show,” adds Arpit.
On the response he has got till now, the actor who has worked down South states, “Oh, it has been great. And interestingly girls are going crazy over me. I think it’s for the first time that a negative character has managed to get so much love and affection from viewers and I am enjoying every moment of it. My family and friends are also raving about it. I am surprised that people across the world are sending me messages saying how much they love the show.”
And so is this the start to his new career in TV? With a smile on his face he answers, “No, this is my first and last show as I only want to do films. After Mahabharat I will be back down South, and hopefully one day will come on the big screen as a B-town star. Its only because of Duryodhan’s magnificent character did I agree to do TV, and I am glad I could achieve so much through it.”
Arpit also fondly talks about his on-screen best friend Karan played by Ahem Sharma and shares, “The chemistry and brotherhood on-screen is as much or may be more in our real life. We have seriously become great friends and I must say the whole team is great to work with. We don’t even realize how time just flies by when we shoot together.”
Keep it going, Arpit!!!

She walked right into television history with her character of Veerawali in
Ramesh Sippy's Buniyaad. From then on the lady hasn't looked back! Mahabharat and A Mouthful of Sky followed, but the lady finds a lot of joy in talking about the show that propelled her towards instant stardom. Ananya Sengupta spoke to Kiran Joneja on the eve of the relaunch of Buniyaad on SaharaOne.
On the relaunch of Buniyaad
Actually it feels really nice. I am looking forward to watching it on screen, as I haven't seen the show in its totality. I am very excited, even my colleagues at work seem to be waiting for it to air again!
On whether she expects Buniyaad to repeat its success
I really don't know about that. See, there is a whole new generation who haven't watched the show, but have heard a lot about it. But I always believed that every show has its own audience. Buniyaad is a classic and it will have its own loyal audience.
On her memories of the show
It was the best work that I have done. It was great working on the show and remember, I met my husband ( director, Ramesh Sippy) on the sets! From then on its been 20 years of togetherness, happy memories and loads of fun.
On the idea of airing the show on SaharaOne
It was entirely their (SaharaOne) idea. They approached us with the idea and we agreed! But the show has been previously rerun on Star and Zee and DD as well.
On working on television today
Well, change is the keyword on television today. I have always believed that if an artist doesn't change with the times he will be left behind. The role that I am doing now in Sinndoor is an interesting one and that's why I decided to do it. Frankly, I work for 20-22 days and I wish it were 15. And as far as the teh quality of work on television is concerned, I am not complaining. See, people get bored with seeing the same stuff, although it takes time for them to get bored!(laughs) But times have changed, the moralistic viewpoint that Buniyaad had cannot work today! The glamour and the bold scenes that we see today is a reflecyion of what is presently happening in society...nothing can be done about it! But again, I think change is welcome!
Siddharth Kumar Tewary’s Mahabharat
on Star Plus is gearing up for the ‘Swayamvar’ of Draupadi in great
style!! While the ‘Yuvraj Abhishek’ ceremony of Duryodhan (Arpit Ranka)
will give him the green chit to take part in the swayamvar,
Krishna (Saurabh Raj Jain) will inform Draupadi (Pooja Sharma) that her
father wants her to get married to Arjun (Shaheer Sheikh).
In the episode to be aired tonight, Krishna will tell Draupadi that Arjun is one of the greatest warriors, but he will face stiff competition from Karan (Ahem Sharma) and others who have the capability to win the swayamvar contest. To make Draupadi calm, Krishna will suggest her to go to Shiv temple where she will get all her answers.
At the Shiv temple, viewers will get to witness the meet-up between Arjun and Draupadi. They both will get a glimpse of each other when Draupadi will be about to get into her palki to make a move. Draupadi will however not realize that the person she saw was Arjun, as he would be in the guise of a Brahmin. However, Draupadi will soon realize that she has indeed seen Arjun when she will add a moustache (similar to the one the Brahmin had) on the portrait of Arjun. Impressed by Arjun, Draupadi will talk to the portrait and mention that she will wait for Arjun to come and win her over at the swayamvar.
Get ready for this grand visual treat of Draupadi’s swayamvar in Mahabharat.

Mahabharat
(Swastik Productions), the magnum opus show on Star Plus, has hit the
right chords with the audience as it relates the tale of the biggest
historical event.
And as the story progresses, get set to see some interesting sequences in the coming days.
Firstly, after successfully defeating the group of Rakshashas (devils), Bheem (Saurav Gurjar) will be proclaimed the next leader of the Rakshash community. And as per the rule of the community, he will be told that he has to marry the women left behind in the kingdom. Hence he will be told to marry Hidimba (Vaishnavi Dhanraj).
But not wanting to get entangled in a marital bond, Bheem will decide to leave the place only to be stopped by his mother Kunti (Shafaq Naaz) who will realise Hidimba’s love for him and will ask Bheem to marry her. On her part, Hidimba will promise that she won’t ask them (Pandavas) to stay back once she gets a child from Bheem who can rule the Rakshash clan.
Informs a source, “Bheem will thus agree to marry her and his wedding will be held in the forest. Soon it will be shown that the couple will be blessed with a son Ghatotkach.”
Says Vaishnavi, “This would mark an end to the character but Hidimba might return whenever needed. I loved the experience and it was a very interesting cameo.”
And soon the drama will heighten with the preparation of Draupadi’s swayamvar. With invitations being sent across the country, Hastinapur will also receive the invite. When Duryodhan (Arpit Ranka) will get to know about it, he will ask his father to proclaim him as the new Yuvraaj so that he can participate in the swayamwar instead of Yudhisthir (Rohit Bhardwaj), who they consider to be dead.
Well, we all know that the swayamvar will be the time the Pandavas will come into the picture once again. So get set to see some exciting twists on the show.
